On Saturday the 30th of August 2025 I had the pleasure of leading a street photography walk at the Bull Ring Markets with twelve fellow photographers from the Royal Photographic Society. I set a few assignments to help sharpen their street photography skills, and then we all headed into the heart of the markets to explore.
The group spread out across the different areas: the colourful fruit and vegetable stalls in the open air, the bustling rug market, and the busy covered market. I decided to spend most of my time in the covered market, where the atmosphere is vibrant and full of character.
There I met Eileen, who runs a hairdressing salon, and her colleague, Loretta who looks after a lovely gift and card stall.

I also spoke with traders from the fish and meat sections. This time, I took the opportunity to ask people if I could make their portraits. To my delight, most of the traders were not only willing but genuinely happy to take part. Some even struck fun poses, adding humour and warmth to the experience.

Beyond portraits, I enjoyed searching for repetition and patterns—rows of colourful clocks, neat lines of spice jars, shelves stacked with sauces, and displays of fresh fish. These details captured the energy and visual rhythm of the market.

It was a wonderful morning, full of conversations, laughter, and countless photographic moments. The whole group embraced the experience with enthusiasm. As fellow participant Tim Tucker put it: “So far out of my photographic comfort zone this morning, I needed a map to get back to it.” Walks like this are a fantastic way to connect with other RPS Central Region members, share new experiences, and stretch your skills as a photographer.
I’m looking forward to seeing the images captured across the different parts of the markets, and within few weeks time to curating a display of the best photographies so the traders can share in the experience.
